About the Solution

This solution is mainly designed for scenarios where workpiece thicknesses need to be measured, especially for bent thin polyethylene (PE) plates. Data acquisition devices are mounted in an opposite layout to scan both the front and back sides of workpieces separately.

Measurement Targets

  • Bent plate thickness

Obtain the distance between corresponding points on the front and back sides of a bent plate to accurately calculate its thickness.

  • Bend plate dimensions

Accurately measure the length and width of the plate to obtain its dimensions.

Measurement Challenges

This solution can meet the following challenges:

  • Data acquisition: A multi-device collaborative scanning layout is required to synchronously acquire data from multiple angles, eliminating measurement blind spots.

  • Data stitching: After acquiring the surface data of the front and back sides of a bent plate, the data needs to be transformed into a unified reference frame and stitched together to ensure that the resulting data corresponds to the physical object for stable subsequent measurements.

  • Interference from plate deformation: The plate is bent and relatively thin, making it difficult to accurately measure its thickness, length, and width.

  • Production efficiency: The 3D laser profiler should be able to quickly scan a large area, and the Mech-MSR software should be able to process data efficiently to ensure the cycle time of production while ensuring high accuracy.

Key Technical Specifications

The key technical specifications of the solution are as follows:

  • Repeatability: <1 mm.

  • Thickness error: ± 0.5 mm.

  • Dimensional error: ± 2 mm.

In different application scenarios, key technical specifications may vary and should be adjusted flexibly according to the actual situation.

Solution Design

According to the project requirements, two Mech-Eye 3D laser profilers in an opposite layout should be used to scan the front and back sides of a bent plate separately.

Hardware and Software Requirements

  • Two Mech-Eye 3D Laser Profilers + Mech-Eye Viewer software

Quickly scans the surface of an object and generates surface data (including depth and intensity information).

  • Mech-MSR Software

Obtains and processes surface data, calculate the thickness and dimensions of the bent plate, and determine whether the plate is qualified.

Deployment Process

Before deploying the solution, you need to get the Bent Plate Thickness and Dimension Measurement solution from Mech-MSR’s solution library. See Quick Guide to Solution Library to learn how to get the solution.

The deployment process of the solution is as follows:

operation workflow
  1. Data Acquisition

Build the hardware and software environment, perform laser profiler calibration, and acquire and view data.

  2. Data Processing

Remove noise and narrow the data range.

  3. Start Measurement

Measure the thickness and dimensions of the bent plate.

  4. Obtain Results

Set acceptable ranges for thickness and dimensions and obtain measurement and inspection results.
